Community Care & Support Resources
Social connections keep us both safe and well, especially during challenging times.
In Minnesota, there are many individuals and families who are staying home out of fear of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) actions, contributing to greater loneliness and social isolation. Community members are also coping with heavy news and community trauma, which takes a toll on bodies and minds.
Staying connected with others can provide comfort, support and a sense of belonging. Trusted neighbors are working together to provide support and resources to their neighbors and increase safety. Reaching out to neighbors, friends, groups, and local organizations can help reduce feelings of isolation and create meaningful support systems.
Here are some tips to stay engaged, build community connections, and find comfort through shared care and understanding:
-
Get to know your neighbors.
Connecting with the people who live closest to you provides a sense of belonging and increases safety. If you don’t already know your neighbors, reach out and introduce yourself. Check in regularly with your loved ones and neighbors and ask for help if you’re struggling.
-
Support local organizations by volunteering your time and skills.
Volunteering is a great way to connect with others, learn more about local organizations, and provide support to your community.
-
Practice compassion for yourself and others.
This can feel especially challenging when so much feels out of our control. Accessing and expressing compassion requires us to first slow down and focus on being mindful and present. Notice the suffering you and others are experiencing, allow yourself to understand that suffering, assume positive intent, and then be motivated to help. Listen to this episode of the Supporting Supporters podcast for more on compassion.
-
Take care of your mental well-being.
Stress and trauma can lead to exhaustion and irritability, which makes it hard to connect with others. Practice self-care by managing your media intake and taking the time to engage in healthy coping strategies such as deep breathing and exercise.
-
Check in with the young people in your life.
Heavy news and world events can impact kids’ and teens’ emotions, stress levels, and mental health. Navigating conversations with youth about heavy topics can be challenging. But what young people don’t hear clearly, they often fill in with fear. Change to Chill offers resources for talking with children about I.C.E activity, navigating heavy news, and coping in stressful times.
